Maskhara, from Foal Gallery to Racetrack
16-Oct-2009

The Breednet Foal Gallery kicked off in 2007 and one of our foals from that year, one that really liked to run from day one, will make her debut at Randwick on Saturday.

Pictured at Kitchwin Hills is this Stratum filly from well-related mare Mascara Magic and while she was romping around in the paddock when this photo was taken in Spring 2007, her older half-brother by Dane Shadow was heading towards a sales preparation for the Magic Millions Yearling Sale from where he would find his way to the stables of Gai Waterhouse.

Shadow Assassin won his debut in the MM Prelude at Randwick in December 2008 and then went to the Gold Coast for the rich Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic in which he finished fourth to Phelan Ready.

Spelled for 38 weeks after that effort to overcome some soundness issues, Shadow Assassin resumed from a spell on October 3 finishing third to Shellscrape in the Group Two AJC Roman Consul stakes and will be seen in action at Randwick on Saturday when he lines up in the Listed Tatts Sir Brian Crowley Stakes.

Given his ability and obvious potential it was no surprise to see Denise Martins Star Thoroughbreds bid to $160,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this year to secure Maskhara, who will make her debut for the Gai Waterhouse stable at Randwick on Saturday.

Maskhara has the benefit of two barrier trials under her belt, most recently winning by two and half lengths at Rosehill on October 2.

From the Gai Waterhouse website comes the following statement summation on Maskhara - possesses a stack of natural talent. Shes the half sister to Shadow Assassin who won the Magic Millions Prelude as a 2YO. Shes drawn well in this. Hard to beat.
