Assets with Attitude
With stock and property markets offering questionable returns over the last decade or so investors are looking for alternate investment opportunities. There is no doubt that combining good advice with sound breeding practice and a bit of luck can lead to success with a portfolio of Thoroughbreds. 1). Vin Cox Bloodstock is employed by Geoff to acquire mares for Dane Shadow. The first mare was Kisma (pictured above) purchased in foal to Danehill Dancer for $55,000. Upon foaling her Danehill Dancer colt the mare went to Dane Shadow during his first season at stud. 2). Roll forward roughly 18 months, the Danehill Dancer colt sold at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale for $85,000 and the weanling Dane Shadow colt was offered at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale. At the time, the weanling colt was one of the better individuals by the stallion and while it was the intention to sell him, it was also a good way to show off Dane Shadow progeny. Vin finished up buying the colt back at $40,000 and left him at Kitchwin to grow out. 3). Roll forward again, the Dane Shadow colt now races as Shellscrape and is the winner of 2 Stakes races including the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Royal Randwick. No one could have foreseen the racehorse he has become but perhaps the most important result has been the revelation of Dane Shadow as a stallion of significance. Geoff has knocked back a substantial offer for Shellscrape already and the horse has won $291,650 in prize money to date. 4). Kisma has a Dane Shadow weanling for next years sales which may bring another $100, 200, 300k 5). If Kisma was sold today she is surely worth a bit more than that again – all on an investment of $55,000. The best part of this investment story is the fun had by Geoff and Mary along the way - try doing all that with a share certificate! Breeding does bring with it risks, however there are ways of managing risk and whilst there are bad luck stories in this game, with detailed planning and sound advice there are real opportunities to combine investment returns with as much fun as you can have. Congrats Geoff and Mary and heres hoping the fun and $’s keep rolling on. With a few Dane Shadows in the portfolio, things look ok! Gritty victory bodes well for the future
Last Wednesday at Canterbury saw the return of the promising Kitchwin Hills graduate Patronyme (Descendant-More Than Ready) who was bred by Paul & Peter Rohan and sold by Kitchwin at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $70,000. Although only winning by a small margin she showed good determination and hit the line strongly. After the race, both Joe Pride and Corey Brown spoke highly of the lightly raced filly, who was having her 5th start with three wins and two placings to date. Descendant, now owned by Carl Holt, has an outstanding Dane Shadow colt (pictured above) that has been entered in the 2010 Magic Millions. Patronyme looks set for a strong Spring campaign and we look forward to her stakes race assignments. Foal of the Week
This weeks Foal of the Week is out of the impeccably bred Carnegie mare Light Chance, a daughter of Slight Chance and a half-sister to Dane Shadow. This particular colt was eagerly awaited and didnt let us down, by Flying Spur it makes him a 3/4 brother to Dane Shadow and a very valuable individual. Owned and bred by Grahame Mapp who visited Kitchwin this week, Grahame was most impressed with the new arrival and looks forward to his athletic future.
