A good-looking Group 1 winner with a pedigree to match, Duporth certainly possesses the credentials necessary for a commercial stallion, whilst also providing breeders with a complete outcross to Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector.
A son of Red Ransom (USA), Duporth is out of the Group 2 winning and Group 1 placed mare Staging (Success Express), and is a half-brother to Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1) winner and young Vinery stallion Excites, and the Group 2 winner Tickets.
Duporth raced exclusively in stakes-level events, beginning his career by running fourth in the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2). On his only other start as a juvenile, Duporth was fifth in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1) behind Sebring and Samantha Miss.
Duporth returned to the track as a three-year-old to win the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3) after a 15-weeks spell. The Sydney Morning Herald reported soon after that an offer of $2 million for the colt was made to his trainer Anthony Cummings after the race, which was turned down by his owner/breeder Peter Moran. It proved to be a good decision, with Duporth running third in the Up and Coming Stakes (Gr 3) behind Dreamscape on his next start before winning the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 2).
Duporth also ran fourth in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1) behind Whobegotyou, Time Thief and Von Costa De Hero - with the likes of Dreamscape and All American behind him - before finally winning his deserved Group 1 by beating his older rivals in the BTC Cup (Gr 1) at Doomben in a three-way photo finish with Bank Robber and Apache Cat. Breeders’ Cup organisers sent an invitation to Duporth after his victory, and an international campaign was mooted by connections.
Duporth was transferred from Anthony Cummings to the stables of Peter Moody in November 2009 after connections reported he needed a change of scenery after demonstrating some ‘coltish’ behaviour. He ran three times without placing before retiring to Kitchwin Hills the winner of three races and over $1.1 million in prizemoney.
Duporth is one of 14 Group or Grade 1 winners by Red Ransom (USA), whose sons Charge Forward and Domesday have started their stud careers so promisingly. Italian Group 1 winner Ekraar (USA) has sired this season’s New Zealand Group 1 winner Ekstreme with Intikhab (USA) siring this season’s Epsom Oaks winner Snow Fairy.
