A tilt at Group One riches awaits Shadows In The Sun who has earned his way to Brisbane with victory at Rosehill. The TJ Smith Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 12 will be the target for the Anthony Cummings-trained two-year-old. Sent out at $5.50 in the BP Woodard and Associates Handicap (1400m), Shadows In The Sun mustered speed in the straight to overhaul American Crew ($13) to win by a short neck with Nextanix ($17) another short half-head away third. Favourite Carved In Stone ($2.50) weakened after being on the pace early to finish ninth, 9-1/2 lengths from the winner. With Cummings in Brisbane overseeing Road To Rock in the Doomben Cup, his son and racing manager Edward was on hand to celebrate the win at Rosehill. "He needed to win prizemoney to ensure a start in the TJ Smith," Cummings said. "He"s done that now so he will absolutely head to Brisbane. "The Sires" Produce may come a bit too soon but the TJ Smith has always been the aim." The Group Two Sires" Produce Stakes (1400m) is at Eagle Farm a week before the TJ Smith. Shadows In The Sun finished third in a 1300m race at Rosehill on May 8 won by American Crew. On that occassion he drew barrier 10 but Brenton Avdulla was able to take advantage of the two gate on Saturday. "He"s a bit stiff with drawing wide barriers and the good alley today made a difference," Avdulla said. "He is a horse with tons of ability." Shadows In The Sun took his prizemoney to almost $77,000 with the win. Story courtesy of Caryl Williamson |
