A MESSAGE TO BREEDERS OF BLUE-BLOODED MARES

If this is an example of what he can produce with his old girlfriends, imagine what is set to happen with "more joyous" mares?

Hurtle Myrtle delivered a very strong message to the breeders of top class mares on Saturday in the Group 2 Surround Stakes.  She was taking on the regally-bred More Joyous who was a $1.22 favourite - More Joyous must be worth 3 times what Dane Shadow"s entire first crop of yearlings sold for.  In 2009 Dane Shadow served a book of mares that will turn upside down the prospects of his progeny.  If he is producing what he has to date, imagine where it is all headed in years to come.

Breeders with the vision and courage to act are set to reap the rewards.

The Wombat"s Whisper

Great work from the Sydney Morning Herald cornering Bart on the best storm since Van Der Hum"s Cup 1976. He sounded delightfully chirpy after the enormous 1st up effort from Faint Perfume. Bart already has a Cox Plate 3YO in the yard, is this one as good??

"I"ve seen everything at Flemington but I"ve never seen hail like this", racing icon Bart Cummings said. "This is the best rain since then (1976). They must have been praying to the gods because this is the best show I have ever seen put on at Randwick or Flemington.’’ This was nature at its most capricious — an untameable force that brought the cancellation of the rest of the meeting.

I was down at the rails, and it took 19 blokes and one wombat to hold our tent in place during the carnage. No better sprint field has lined up in Australia than the 2010 Newmarket and the fact that King Pulse was the only horse injured was a miracle, lets hope the gutsy and enigmatic "Canny Lad" pulls through. It was a great training performance yet again from Peter Moody however to consistently encourage Wanted to perform at the elite level.

This weekend we will see "Duel Guineas" in Sydney and Melbourne. I expect that the Rosehill version will be dominated by the Queenslanders Shoot Out and Captain Sonador, they really rattled home last start and the mile should not be a concern. These horses fly the flag for up and coming non-Danehill shuttlers High Chaparral and Shamardal respectively. I have a "watch" on Hanks wherever he may turn up given my comments on his good looks last week. It looks like he will go to Sydney with Olly on board. Hanks flies the flag for Encosta De Lago and the established champ will have a fight on his hands. I still really want to see Denman get the chocolates in the Australian Guineas, I want him to fulfil his potential, but I fear that the barrier and not the mile will make him beatable on Saturday….. May you ride with a stopwatch in your head Mr McEvoy!

In the Australian Cup I mentioned nearly every horse last week but I am now leaning to the Stravinsky mare Miss Maren. Her third in the St George was excellent despite being well beaten by Heart Of Dreams. Her two runs at 2000m in the MacKinnon and the Kelt last campaign were exceptional, it must be great form for this. She has won on a slow track but her dead form is very good, I think that she is the horse going places. Speaking of going places, that sneaky Danny O"Brien of Shamrocker fame, may run Star Witness in the Slipper….. If he can run clockwise he must be a huge chance - Note Star Witness form through Crystal Lily who has already been backed heavily in the Sweet Embrace on Saturday!!!!!

Best of luck to all runners, may the weather bring plenty of great racing in all states.

Easter Yearling Highlights

Breaking News/Dane Shadow 08

A tough type from a tough family. This Dane Shadow colt is a half brother to the very consistent News Alert (7 wins including the Gr3 W J Healey), from the City winning mare Breaking News. This bloke is straight out of the quality Dane Shadow mould, and will represent his dad in fine form.

Eishin Maysville/Canny Lad 08

If ever you hoped a colt could acquire Group 1 status as to advance his stallion career its with this bloke. From the direct family of Flying Spur & Encosta de Lago, this colt is out of a half-sister to Holy Roman Emperor, Milanova etc. By the forever consistent Canny Lad, if this colt were to live up to his pedigree, a Bletchingly sire lined colt at stud would have much appeal.

Jestajewel/Rock of Gibraltar 08

This colt is the second foal of the City winning, stakes-placed Rory’s Jester mare Jestajewel and is a lovely individual. Very forward with heaps of bone and a lovely relaxed walk. This particular colt will be a stand out at Easter, not often does Rock Of Gibraltar leave such quality and strength in his progeny, and this will surely be appreciated.

Farm Conditions Update

Kitchwin"s Bottom Farm received 10mm in a few scattered showers and the Top Farm received no rain at all.
