The oldest progeny of Arrowfield Stud based Snitzel are only two year-olds, but he is undoubtedly the sire of the moment amongst his peers and buyers were quick to snap up his progeny at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, his filly from Innocense the top priced filly of the sale when she made $130,000 for Carramar Park on Sunday.
Snitzel had three yearlings offered and all were sold at a profit to their breeders, coming off a service fee of $33,000.
Coolmore based Fastnet Rock provided the sale-topper when his colt from Sea Folly fetched $250,000 for Widden Stud on Monday with seven yearlings in total averaging $96,071 providing a positive if not spectacular return for the majority of vendors off a $55,000 fee.
Although, this statistic needs to be looked at in perspective as his stock at this sale would be considered to have come from the lower end of the spectrum of his foal crop and the fact they could still mostly help their breeder go close to breaking even is a plus. Dane Shadow proved most profitable for his supporters with 15 youngsters averaging $50,964, more than six times his 2007 service fee of $7,700.
The Kitchwin Hills based sire had his service fee upped to $16,500 last spring following the success of his first runners and broodmare owners have been keen to stick with him, Dane Shadow covering his biggest book of 166 mares, so onwards and upwards for this horse. Bert Vieira finished the sale as leading buyer securing seven youngsters for $573,500, adding a Dane Shadow colt from Zabere for $125,000 on Monday to his tally from Sunday which included the Oratorio (IRE) colt from Pacific Dreams for $200,000. Domestic buyers from here and interstate provided the bulk of the action with scant representation from the Asian sector, who seem to have now found it more appealing to shop upmarket, now that ‘upmarket’ has gone ‘downmarket’ so to speak bringing many of the progeny of champion sires Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago back into their price range.
